Abstract
In this paper, a compact planar monopole wearable antenna is presented. The proposed antenna is designed based on the conventional rectangular patch antenna. The overall size of the antenna is only 16×24×0.5 mm3 or 0.13λ_0×0.196λ_0×0.004λ_0 where λ_0 is the wavelength in free-space concerning 2.4 GHz frequency. Furthermore, in this design, a partial ground plane and defected ground structure techniques are also used to improve the antenna's overall performance. More than 84% size reduction based on the conventional rectangular patch antenna is achieved for the proposed design. The proposed antenna has a fractional band width of 6.2%, a gain of 1.08 dBi, and, total efficiency at 2.45 GHz is more than 73%. Furthermore, the antenna's performance over a phantom model of chest tissue is examined as well, and the antenna showed an acceptable performance. Finally, the proposed antenna's scientific absorption rate (SAR) value is determined and the result is declared a safe performance.
